Touring Holidays in England: Top Attractions by Kate Taylor
Anyone seeking a fun and convenient way to explore England can enjoy a unique adventure when they embark on a caravan or motorhome touring holiday. Offering comfort, flexibility and independence while travelling, touring holidays are a great choice for those wanting to make the most of England’s varied attractions. There are a multitude of things to see and do as you make your way around the country. As a start, here are the attractions that have made it to the finals of the Enjoy England Awards for Excellence 2010 in the Best Small Attractions category, to look out for on your travels:
Museum of the Jewellery Quarter, Birmingham
This is one of England’s most unique destinations. The Smith & Pepper Jewellery Factory was fully operational until the doors were shut in 1981 and the factory was preserved exactly as it was, before being re-opened as a museum in 1993. Today, the museum proves a popular attraction, offering a time capsule that conveys the atmosphere, industrial heritage and social history of one of England’s most famous Quarters. Visitors can take a guided tour as well as relax in the museum Tea Room and take away a souvenir from the museum shop.
Oakham Treasures, Bristol
This collection of memorabilia spans the last 100 years and comprises vintage tractors, farm equipment and thousands of near perfectly preserved items from supermarkets and other retail outlets from the late 19th and 20th centuries. This unusual mix is the result of the diverse set of interests held by the collection’s original owner. Visitors can examine retail and food products in their original packaging and an impressive collection of enamelled advertising signs, alongside a separate collection of Royal Mail letterboxes.
Ripley Castle, near Harrogate
Ripley Castle is home to the Ingilby family, which is believed to be the 6th oldest family in the country still to live in the same residence. Seven hundred years and 26 generations since the castle was first built, the doors are now open to the public to offer an in-depth look at life in the English north over the years. The Gunpowder Plot, civil war and other military campaigns are all explored here along with fascinating details of day-to-day life, thanks to the informative and enthusiastic tour guide staff. Alongside a tour of the house, guests can enjoy the gardens, the children’s adventure play area, the national Hyacinth collection, a deer park, and tea room in the castle yard.
