Boba tea: An exquisite beverage
It has always been said that some beverages affect our health in miscellaneous ways. However, the healing characteristics of teas have helped men to counteract the negative effects of overweight during generations. Nowadays, there exists a wide variety of teas with the most diverse tastes and elaboration methods. Nonetheless, the boba tea drink, or as it is frequently named bubble drink, expands its frontiers with an overwhelming acceptance. Boba tea tastes a way no other beverage has ever being able to. The ingredients of this drink can certainly vary from country to country, even from region to region, but generally sugar or honey and milk, together with small pieces of tapioca mostly known as “boba”, are the principle ingredients.
Although it is served in most tea houses of the world and its popularity has reached unsuspected levels, it was not until 1980s that it appeared on the market.
Its origin was reported in Taiwan, but later it spread to the East Asian countries, then, it migrated to Canada and finally it invaded the Chinatowns of United States.
There are uncountable variances from the original boba tea created in Taiwan. Most of these versions have added some ingredients, although the preparation is still applied to all of them equally. The most popular variants nowadays are the “bubble black tea” which is a traditional Chinese beverage that means in a literary translation “foam Red Tea” ( pà o mò hóng chá), the “bubble green tea”( pà o mò lÇœ chá)and the “pearl milk tea”( zhÄ”n zhÅ« nÇŽi chá).
The oldest boba tea ever prepared consisted of a gathering of hot Taiwanese black tea, some tapioca pearls, syrup or honey and condensed milk. At the beginning, reports stated that it was not until a Japanese TV-show promoted it, the boba tea was not solicited or al least consumed. However, this simple touch of publicity increased its consumption in Asia and, successively, in other regions of the world.
In many places and contrary to its initial conception, it is consumed cold rather than hot. One of the main ingredients is also commonly replaced by natural substances: the black tea. Now, the use of jasmine- infused green tea or the total substitution of the tea by other fruit- based products have given a new and fresh perspective to the boba tea worldwide.
If you want to try with a new flavor, you can simply add some fruit- based products which are now commercialized as powders, juices, pulps or syrups.
