Inspiration through Three Cups of Tea

Our Article of discussion is the act of service.

I strongly believe that the best and quickest way to wisdom and enlightenment is through service to others and our planet. It is my opinion that through service we can learn more about people and ourselves than through most other means. Selfless service is the spirit of compassion in action. It is a natural result of being true to who and what we are, responding to the innate spontaneous impulse to spread joy and eliminate suffering in the lives of others. It is said that one selfless act destroys ten thousand sanskaras ( the impressions of karma ).
Service is the lack of ego and it is through the ashes of the ego that we can truly dedicate our lives to this enlightening quest.

Tenzin Gyatso the 14th Dalai Lama puts it beautifully in this quote” We begin from the recognition that all beings cherish happiness and do not want suffering. It then becomes both morally wrong and pragmatically unwise to pursue only one’s own happiness oblivious to the feelings and aspirations of all others who surround us as members of the same human family. The wiser course is to think of others when pursuing our own happiness”.

This being said, I want to give my deepest adoration to a man who has dedicated the best part of his life to serving others in a desolate and war torn region of Pakistan ~ Greg Mortenson.
If you have not read the book about his struggles and triumphs building schools in the high mountains of the Himalayas, than do so and…do it now.
This book is a modern fairytale about a knight in shining armor. Greg, through dedication, humility and sometimes single handedly working non-stop, has been building schools in almost inaccessible, remote areas of Pakistan for the last 12 years.
He is now in Afghanistan rebuilding and renewing the war torn schools. Children who once had homes, education and a life can now have some place of enlightenment and joy.
This man is a beautiful example of service and miracles. Because of his knowing and yearning for bettering our human brothers and sisters lives he has experienced many synchronized acts…”miracles”. Enabling him to do his great works.
Through his act of service Greg gained enlightenment of a phenomenal kind.
The kind of knowing that makes your human experience priceless. Greg has the ability to speak to the rest of us with a kind of certainty that so many of us lack in our lives. Certainty of many things and one of the most important being, that schools and education are the real end violence and to cease war. And even though we are from far away places, speak different languages and we may look different, that we all want the same things while on this human journey, education, food to feed our families, clean drinking water, shelter and to know beauty and joy ~ The means to pursue happiness.
It may sound to simple but it is a certain outward fact stated by many…all who dedicate their lives to service…that we are more alike than we are different, that all any body wants  are few simple things. The problems of our planet may seem big and overwhelming but in the light of wisdom from all who serve… it really boils down to a few very simple facts… and for those things to be had by all it is going to take the 10 percent to give up selfishness and fear…to learn the beautiful act of service for the benefit of the whole.

It is my honor to share this book with you. Written in collaboration by Greg Mortensen and David Oliver Relin: Three Cups of Tea. “An inspiring account about how we can all make a difference”.

We just need open our hearts and strive for enlightenment over all ignorance, no matter what the immediate consequence for the outcome is surely the way to human understanding and true love for all human, animal and planet kind.
